Entrusting your Data to Hitachi
Posted in Competition, Tech Talk on November 10th, 2009 No Comments »
A huge portion of Hitachi’s approach to storage is all about ensuring data safety. At the core of our storage culture we very much recognize that you as our customers are entrusting us, Hitachi, to be the careful custodians of one of your most valuable asset: your data. Data and its sister Information (note information [...]
Welcome Symantec to the Scalable NAS Market

I ‘ve been reviewing Symantec’s new FileStore and their soon to be released S4 offerings. There are quite a few resources available on FileStore from their slides on the Internet to their product page. Firstly I want to welcome them to the clustered NAS business much like HP is there already with EXDS, their Polyserve appliance. [...]
I Feel Flattered

Last week there was a rumor that EMC would buy Kazeon and this week they confirmed the rumor with a purchase. (Some sound commentary on Kazeon from one of the leaders in the eDiscovery industry can be found here.) Well, I have to thank EMC again for copying Hitachi, it makes me feel flattered — [...]
It is not just me, they do copy

In doing some browsing recently I ran across Ken Ow-Wing’s blog I ran across this post. He to observes that the V-Max while architected differently is indeed largely a feature oriented copy of the USP-V. I know that EMC hates this point, but hey truth is truth. One of Ken’s extremely interesting points is:
You have got to be kidding me – UPDATED

I recently ran across this post on Storagezilla. Well I have to say after having looked at their approach to file tiering I have to say nice try. As I’ve talked about in the past I was there when an external Acopia (now a product of F5) reference customer basically stated they would throw out [...]
What’s under my skin?

Recently, my competitors have asserted that V-Max has gotten under both mine and my HDS colleagues skin. Well last time I checked the only thing under our skin was flesh and blood just like Barry. I think that what Barry is talking about is the fact that EMC has copied Hitachi on several occasions and [...]
What is commodity?

As a part of ongoing architecture discussions, the concept of commodity has come up. First I would like to start with a few questions on the point. < --more-->
A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away

“Hitachi released a storage system called the Universal Storage Platform, USP. Our customers were happy, they had found a way to improve the performance of their EMC Symmetrix systems: put a USP in front of the Symmetrix and virtualize it! However EMC did not want to hear about this, and when Hitachi told the world [...]
Reality Distortion Field

I’m sure that when this is referenced with Mr. Steve Jobs of Apple fame everyone can understand RDF and if not check out here and here. Well in this case I’m extending RDF to EMC’s circus this week where by the gaudiness of the event and the recycling of content is standard fair. It is [...]
Once more…

I credit EMC with copying Hitachi again. As my colleague Hu pointed out in his most recent post, EMC has used clever marketing and again implemented what Hitachi has been doing for quite some time with their V-MX. I will be a little bit more brazen and I’m sure get push back from Barry and [...]
