by Hu Yoshida on Jun 9, 2015

Since our Connect 2015 event last month in Las Vegas where we displayed a number of Social Innovation solutions, I have had a lot of questions about what we mean by Social Innovation and how it compares to other similar strategies.

Software-Defined Is only As Good As The Infrastructure Behind It

by Hu Yoshida on May 13, 2015

Software defined infrastructure provides flexibility and business agility, but it can only be as good as the underlying hardware it uses.  One of the key tenets for software-defined infrastructure is abstraction to eliminate complexity and  provide functionality that is dynamic and scalable. Storage is only one part of the infrastructure, but it is the foundation for a software defined infrastructure. The ability to automate and efficiently access the data by upper levels of the infrastructure depends on how we virtualize the storage layer.

Achieving the Dream – One Operating System for Midrange to Enterprise Storage

by Hu Yoshida on Apr 29, 2015

As long as I have been in storage, the dream has been to have a common operating system for midrange and enterprise storage.  This would help to reduce development costs and cycles for vendors, while simplifying management, and providing the right price point without sacrificing functionality for end users. However, since midrange storage is targeted at smaller organizations, with smaller IT budgets, midrange storage systems have always required a different architecture with scaled down functionality and availability. This meant that the operating system for the midrange storage systems had to be different, the functionality was limited and different management tools were required. Hitachi has achieved the dream of a common operating system with the introduction of the Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) models G200, G400, G600, and G800, which run the same operating system as the enterprise-class VSP G1000.

NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT ENTERPRISE STORAGE

by Hu Yoshida on Apr 21, 2015

TBR’s Data Center Server and Storage Market Forecast indicates revenue growth in the global data center flash storage market will exceed all other server and storage sub-segments from 2014 to 2018, rising at a 22.9% CAGR to more than $13.5 billion while external data center disk storage revenues will shrink at a 5.3% CAGR to nearly $18.1 billion. For those who believe that only new-style AFAs can succeed in this market, it  would seem to have a dampening effect on the enterprise storage market. In terms of Hitachi Data Systems, we continue to do well with our enterprise storage arrays. Here are some proof points.

Joint Webinar with VMware and HDS – Delivering Simplified Scalable IT with VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes and Hitachi Storage

by Hu Yoshida on Apr 9, 2015

I began 2015 with blog on Hitachi Storage for Virtual Volumes, arguably the most discussed storage technology in recent years. In February of this year Hitachi Data Systems announced the early support for VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes (VVOLs), simplifying customers’ cloud journey and extending the value of Hitachi’s rich infrastructure solutions. VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes is a major technological advancement in the storage ecosystem that can solve several key issues for customers: overprovisioning of storage, inflexibility to perform granular data services, complex provisioning and manual operational changes, lack of agility in responding to business requirements. Hitachi is likely to be the first storage provider to offer NFS integration with VVOLs. Read More »
