Mainframes are alive and well at Hitachi Data Systems
by Hu Yoshida on Jan 31, 2013
IDC’s WW Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker, 3Q1012 reports that Hitachi Data Systems has shipped more storage capacity into mainframe environments than any other supplier during the first 9 months of 2012. A lot of this can be attributed to our virtualization and dynamic tiering capabilities, which are unique in the industry and provide real cost savings during difficult times. Come find out why more customers choose VSP for their mainframe storage requirements at the SHARE 2013 conference, February 3 – 8, at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square Hotel.
The IDC report did not include the impact of our Hitachi Accelerated Flash announcement in November, but this is expected to increase our lead in the coming months. Here is what Eric Sheppard, research director for IDC Storage, has to say.
“With an increasing number of enterprises seeing real performance benefits from introducing solid state drives into their storage environments, it makes perfect sense for these same enterprises to expand their use of solid state to their mainframe storage systems, Hitachi Accelerated Flash support for mainframe, combined with the company’s well established presence in the mainframe storage market, puts HDS in an excellent position to help its customers make just such a move.”
Hitachi Accelerated Flash provides better performance than SLC flash SSDs, while providing 40% lower cost than competitive MLC SSDs. This, combined with Hitachi Dynamic Tiering for internal and external storage virtualization, with three storage tiers and more flexible policy controls, provide higher performance and lower TCO than any competitive mainframe storage system.
In addition to these advanced functions that are unique to Hitachi Data Systems, Hitachi, Ltd. and IBM have successfully completed joint testing of both VSP, FICON mainframe storage compatibility and integration testing of Hitachi Universal Replicator and IBM GDPS/PPRC HyperSwap® for advanced business continuity and disaster recovery deployments, making it easier for mainframe customers to install Hitachi Data Systems and IBM products in their IT environments.
You can see these demonstrations at SHARE 2013 in booth 303 and hear presentations by William Smith on “HDT – Storage Tiering for the Mainframe,” Feb 5, 3:00 – 4:00pm, and again on Feb 6, 3:00 – 4:00pm, where he will present “Hitachi VSP Update and Directions”. He will also participate on a Tiered DISK Storage panel with IBM and EMC on Feb 5, 11:00 am – 12:15pm..
If you are interested in mainframe performance, Steve Rice, a master performance consultant for HDS, will hold a lunch and learn on “IBM System Z High Performance FICON (zHPF) on Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform” on Feb 7, 12:15 – 1:15pm.
Claus Mikkelsen, our chief scientist, will also be there to put this all into perspective with his session, “The Dollars and SENSE of Mainframe Storage and Virtualization” on Thursday Feb 7, 1:30 – 2:30pm.
Come see what Hitachi Data Systems has to offer in terms of performance, functionality, compatibility, and cost savings for mainframe at Share 2013. . Stop by booth 303, meet our mainframe team, and talk to customers who use HDS storage systems.
Thanks to those who have read my blog post, and for those that pointed out that the shipment data for the first nine months referred to mainframe environments specifically. We’ve made an update in the original post to reflect that.
