Hitachi was founded more than 100 years ago in a small electrical repair shop by Mr. Namihei Odaira. After constantly repairing imported, electrical motors for a mining company in Hitachi city, Mr. Odaira decided to build a more reliable electrical motor with original technology for the rigorous requirements of the mining company. He established a new company and produced a 5 HP electrical motor. He named the company “Hitachi” which means “sunrise” to reflect the company’s commitment to contributing to society through the development of original technology and products. At first, Hitachi had only one customer and struggled through the depression that preceded World War I, but they kept focused on developing their employees and technology. When World War I stopped the import of large hydroelectric generators from Europe, Hitachi was the only company that could step up to develop and deliver a 10,000 HP water turbine. Since then Hitachi has grown to be one of the world’s most successful companies with more than $100 billion in revenue.
To last 100 years, a business needs to have more than great products and services, it needs to have a solid culture with an unwavering commitment to business ethics and a focus on the diversity and success of its employees, customers and partners. At Hitachi, we call this the Hitachi Spirit. The Hitachi Spirit is Wa(trust), Makoto(integrity) and Kaitakusha-Seishin(a pioneering spirit). It is more than a slogan or a poster on the wall, it is who we are.
In October, Hitachi Groups celebrate Corporate Ethics Month where we take time out to review our ethical policies and acknowledge our commitment to the standards that make us more than a great company. As part of this annual event, from October 1-5, HDS is celebrating Corporate Social Responsibility Awareness Week. During this week, HDS will highlight activities in ethics, human rights, environmental stewardship, workplace diversity, charitable contribution and volunteerism.
These activities definitely inspire the people of HDS, but our CSR activities also inspire much more than that. Our CSR activities benefit our customers and partners, who can trust in the standards that HDS lives by in our business relationships. Our CSR activities benefit our customers and the customers of our customers, who can be confident in the sourcing, quality and commitment of excellence in HDS products and services. Our CSR activities also benefit local communities, with whom HDS partners for advancement in education, environmental stewardship, arts and culture, and youth and economic development. Take a look at our Corporate Social Responsibility Overview for some examples of our CSR program activities.
Though we celebrate CSR awareness in October, the commitment we make to our ethical standards lasts year-round. It is the reason we have been recognized as One of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for two consecutive years, as well as a Fortune Best Place to Work, and have an impressive history of product innovation. Not many companies have such a long history of success, but we are proud of the contributions we have made to society over the past 100 years, and aspire to continue living the standards in our partnerships and business practices to bring innovations to our society for at least 100 years more.

Thank you for shedding additional light on Hitachi’s humble but entrepreneurial beginnings by founder, Mr. Odaira. This strikes an amazing parallel with the founding of HP by William Hewlett and David Packard in the world-reknown “HP garage”. As a relatively new employee, I was also pleasantly surprised to learn that Hitachi means “sunrise”, which is tightly embroidered with a forward-looking vision. Tou·ché to infinite sunrises to come!
Welcome to Hitachi. It is our core values that live on in employees like you that will carry Hitachi through the next 100 years and beyond.
