Happy Birthday VSP
by Hu Yoshida on Sep 27, 2011
Today, September 27, 2011, marks the one-year anniversary of our Virtual Storage Platform (VSP) announcement. VSP has been the most successful product in our history, and according to Roberto Basilio, our VP of Product Management for Storage Hardware, VSP helped us increase the shipment of storage systems by 27%, and nearly quadruple (387%) the capacity shipped in the same period.
There are 1,800 PB of storage installed in VSP, not counting external storage that is virtualized by VSP. While that capacity growth is impressive, what is even more impressive is the increased efficiency of that capacity through thin provisioning and dynamic tiering. A 70% attach rate for Hitachi Dynamic Provisioning (HDP) shows the penetration of thin provisioning, and a 40% attach rate for Hitachi Dynamic Tiering (HDT) shows the acceptance of dynamic tiering.
Roberto believes, “VSP has gained the attention of the market with its flexibility, performance, functionality, integration and ease of deployment that makes it a much better platform to deliver enterprise class services.”
Teliti Datacentre is an example of what VSP means for customers. Teliti, a cloud services provider in Malaysia, has VSP installed with VMware and CISCO technologies. VSP enables Teliti to reduce disk drive costs by up to 70% through the use of tiered storage, storage reclamation, and Hitachi Dynamic Tiering software. Teliti may also realize up to 33% reduction in TCO per terabyte in the first year of implementation. In addition, VSP can achieve more than 30% reduction in power, cooling, and floor space costs.
So please join me in wishing a very Happy Birthday to VSP, and many happy returns!
