CoolCenter50 and Harmonious Green

by Hu Yoshida on Nov 11, 2007

In September of this year Hitachi ltd, our parent company announced a program in Japan that is known as CoolCenter50 which is targeted at reducing power consumption in their Yokohama and Okayama data center by 50% in 5 years. This effort encompasses all of the groups in Hitachi including, air conditioning, power generation, IT equipment and management software.

In support of this goal, Naoya Takahashi, the Executive General Manager and Vice President of the Information and Telecommunications Group announced last week the Harmonious Green Plan which aims to reduce 330,000 tons of CO2 in the next 5 years through the development of power saving IT products. Dr. Takahashi is the same Takahashi who is credited with the development of the USP storage virtualization platform and its predecessor, the Lightning 9990. So when Takahashi-san states that this is the goal, there is a track record that gives it a great deal of credibility. The amount of reduction is calculated from the predicted CO2 emissions which would have accumulated if Hitachi’s shipping volume of IT products in the fiscal year 2007 remains constant for the next 5 years.

The main purpose of the Harmonious Green Plan is to promote product development while creating a CO2 reduction roadmap and emphasizing the importance of power conservation for Hitachi’s major IT products and devices such as server, storage and network devices. The plan will address the operational level through the use of comprehensive management software, the product level through the use of Hitachi’s unique server and storage virtualization technologies, and at the component level through semiconductor power saving and cooling technologies.

While CoolCenter50 and Harmonious Green are programs which are announced in Japan where Hitachi can leverage all it’s corporate resources, Hitachi Data Systems is a member of the Information and Telecommunications group, and can utilize the results of these programs as it applies to our global focus area of storage and data management services. Specific examples of how we leverage the Harmonious Green plan are the use of storage virtualization, Dynamic Provisioning, and the recent announcement of a power saving feature for the modular AMS product line which enables a user to power down an AMS array group when it is not being accessed for extended periods. You can expect to see continuing enhancements and solutions from HDS and other Hitachi divisions, in support of Harmonious Green and CoolCenter50.

But I won’t mention the G word in this note… especially since my fellow blogger Hu already covers this very eloquently. [...]

[...] As part of their CoolCenter50 initiative to reduce data center power 50%  in 5 years, Hitachi Ltd. issued a statement that they have set an aggressive PUE target of 1.6 for their new class IV data center in Yokohama, Japan. This data center is scheduled to be in production by April 2009 and will be architected to leverage the collective product innovations of the Hitachi Information and Technology Systems Group (ITSG) which includes storage systems, servers, and networking equipment and other key areas of Hitachi technology in thermal hydraulic cooling systems, uninterruptible power supplies, and power supply converters.   [...]
