30 types of Storage Ownership Costs
by David Merrill on July 13, 2006
I realized in my last BLOG that I reference the 30 types of storage TCO elements. You can find this information in my Storage Economics white paper, but for openness sake, here is a list of the 30. Remember that Price does not equal Cost, use some of the 30 types of storage costs (or actions)to calculate your own TCSO. Have I missed some areas? Let me know.
1. Storage hardware purchase avoidance
2. Storage software purchase avoidance
3. Hardware maintenance cost reductions
4. Software license fee reductions
5. Reduced time for backup windows
6. Faster recovery times in the event of catastrophic loss
7. Faster recovery times for non-catastrophic loss
8. Reduced Storage Administration (aggregate)
9. Reduction of weekly, common storage management tasks
10. Staff and contractor time spent for planned outages
11. Business impact due to planned outages
12. Business impact due to higher data path availability
13. Business impact due to higher storage subsystem availability
14. Data center floor space reduction
15. Electricity costs (both kWatt and BTU reduction)
16. Time saved with faster provisioning of storage
17. Reducing servers that provide CIFS / NFS mounted storage
18. Reducing the number of backup servers
19. Storage and storage network management simplicity
20. Time for workload balancing, re-provisioning storage
21. Mean-time to provision (acquire, install, configure) storage
22. Compliance risk, penalties for data retention, protection
23. Reducing the number of tape libraries, tape drives
24. Reduce developer time with faster access to DBMS copies
25. Local storage network infrastructure reduction
26. Long distance circuit cost reduction
27. Business impact with faster storage performance
28. Reduced waste, fragmentation of disk storage
29. Storage downtime due to capacity problems, mgmt errors
30. Disaster protection, reduced cost of risk

[...] A few weeks ago I wrote about the 30 types of ‘things’ that make up the total cost of storage ownership. Anil Gupta commented on my blog and made some good points, in addition to providing a good graphic on how to characterize these costs. The point was made, that I have not thought of everything. I seem to hear that from my kids from time to time. [...]
