Does Santa like Tiered Storage Automation from HDS?

There’s been a lot of discussion around the automation of storage tiers recently, and I wanted to take a few minutes to focus on what HDS has been doing for many years in this space. Hu Yoshida alluded to this in his recent blog entry. I too spent some time on the topic recently.
Our Policy Based Management (PBM) solution leverages our USP platform, Tiered Storage Manager and our services arm to create a policy-based SLA management solution. To help pait the picture (albeit a festive picture), SLAs come from Santa, aka “the boss”. The solution allows administrators (aka the “elves”) to migrate data in a live system and invisibly to the applications. The software tools also enable both monitoring and intervention to be automated.
Given ‘tis the season, I was wondering whether Santa really cared about Tiered Storage Automation. The answer is probably yes: just think of all the transactions he’s got to deal with. There is a lot of controversy about how many elves there are, and whether they’re storage admins. I have to admit that I don’t have a credible case study on how we helped Santa with his storage needs! On a more serious note, you can take a look at this customer success story. It is from 2007, but I picked it because it’s about a great Swedish customer of ours (so we’re seasonably close to the North Pole!). If if your’re looking to put tiered storage automation, cost reduction, improved reliability and downtime avoidance under the tree this year… you know where to go.
All that said, and since we’ve had automation for a while, we’ve been asking ourselves do we (I mean our customers) really need to worry about storage tiers anymore? Let’s keep the discussion going…

One has to wonder – how would Santa feel upon learning that he had to outsource part of the tiering process to HDS Professional Services?
I’ll bet he would prefer to save all that OpEx and have the storage array Fully Automate the Storage Tiering process for him? It’s so easy, even a junior elf can do it!

Barry,
I have to reveal a secret…Santa told me he’s been using HDS tiered storage automation for years just like many of our customers.
Seriously though, Happy Holidays!

Not Santa but the customers would be happy if you made RAID manager CCI a better CLI tool. It would be good if we eliminated the need for HORCM files and instead had the device numbers listed directly in the commands.
Believe me no customer likes HORCM files which are prone to errors etc. A small space and you get a cryptic error which makes one go crazy.
And since the customer has already paid for a shadow image or true copy license it makes him eligible to get a better CLI tool free.
Meanwhile storage navigator is a very good GUI and yes for those who can afford Tiered Storage Manager, they need not look beyond.
